  • Warning on Fraud Travel Agents selling Liveaboard Holiday Packages
    30th March 2015
Following a number of complaints from various tour operators, it has come to the notice of Liveaboard Association of Maldives (LAM) that an individual by the name of “Ahmed Hardy” and his related companies has been fraudulently selling Liveaboards to individual travelers and Foreign/Local Tour Operators. LAM advises holidaymakers and tour operators to be aware of this individual and his related companies.

LAM received complaints from various operators about "Ahmed Hardy" and his related companies with regard to incidents involving fake bookings and collecting payments without offering the service. The same has also been reported to Ministry of Tourism and other concerned authorities. The scams involves fraudulent websites claiming to be authorized travel agents offering cheap Liveaboards. Cases of websites selling fake holidays and cruise packages have also been reported.

We advise holidaymakers to be aware of rock-bottom prices, to book – where possible – through established LAM members featured on www.liveaboards.mv or reputable travel companies listed on www.matato.org , and to enquire about any unfamiliar holiday retailers.

LAM would also like to inform that if an agent or tour operator claims to be a member of a body such as LAM, it should be confirmed through the Association’s website.

Any queries to verify the membership status with LAM and to reconfirm company’s name and business address before making a booking regarding members of LAM can be sent to admin@liveaboardassociation.mv

  • LAM meets with HDC regarding the proposed Marina at Hulhumale
    26th March 2015
LAM meets with HDC regarding the proposed Marina Plan at Hulhumale' and stated that Liveaboards will not leave without an alternative solution:

25th March : Executive Board Members of Liveaboard Association have met with the New Managing Director of HDC regarding the proposed plan of developing a marina at hulhumale' lagoon which the local Liveaboards have been using for a long period.

     Summary of the discussion:

HDC will be giving the port to a private (local or international) party for development. It's up to the developer to decide on the details. HDC will give them a guideline on what is required.

LAM is open to send opinions on requirement requests, so HDC can include it in the material for the marina developer.

As per HDC , Most likely all the services LAM proposes would be included. But the details are not ready yet. Things like support boat (dhoni) and dinghy kept near the safari is again a question mark as developer will decide.

The fee, charges ...Etc are all up to the developer.

Completion : Most likely towards end of 2016 the marina will be ready to give service as per HDC.

Quite worrying is that once the marina is given for development and management that party could decide to move the Local Liveaboards from Hulhumale which the industry may not have any place to go ?

LAM asked where the 40 years old Industry had to move and HDC said,  it can be answered by Ministry of Tourism. So LAM have informed boldly that the industry will not move until the government show an alternative place. HDC informed that the message would be passed to Ministry, but that they can't do anything as their territory is Hulhumale only.

    Date : 8th February 2015
    Time : 16.00 Hrs
Venue : Voyages Maldives , Meeting Room

    1. Mr.Ismail Hameed President of LAM introduced the members of LAM to MSA representatives and welcomed the members of MSA to the meeting to discuss about the interest of local surfers in the market.

    2. Mr.Aznil President of MSA introduces the members of MSA to LAM and commenced in sharing the major issues and challenges in the current surfing market for tourist on resorts, Liveaboards and Guest Houses.

    3. Mr.Aznil mentioned that there are huge differences and discriminations between foreign guides and local surf guides in the current market situation.  He also mentioned that most foreign guides are on tourist visa and stressed that it's illegal to perform as an employee.

    4. LAM members attended agreed and Mr.Ismail mentioned that foreign surf guides or anyone who comes as a tourist should not work as an employee acting as a surf guide. And mentioned that it is against the law which LAM will be informing the industry about the concern and will advise not to practice this at all if anyone if doing it.

    5. Mr.Aznil mentioned that there have been incidents where foreigners have been employed by surfing operators in resorts , which is also illegal. However, these employees themselves have hired locals to work under them.

    6. Mr.Aznil's mentioned that the proposal from MSA is to develop a batch of verified and certified surf guides to the market in 3 different levels, whereas these surf guides will be screened with their potentials and history of experiences before ranking. Meanwhile, MSA recommends to have a local MSA Certified surf guide on each Liveaboard surfing trip.

    7. Mr.Riyaz mentioned that it's important to standardize and certify the guides with proper screening, as the market should also have a quality of guides represented. He also mentioned that he supports the idea of having a local surf guide onboard each surf trip.

    8. Ms.Anth Salah mentioned that there have been bookings where repeaters who have come numerous times may want to do a cruise themselves privately with their captain, hence she asked if these trips would still require a surf guide on the circumstances which MSA requests.

    9. Mr.Asif mentioned that a list of certified surf guides details with comments from their previous trips will enhance the credibility and told that it would be great to have these information classified in categories available on MSA website, so that LAM members can contact them.

    10. Mr. Hassan Haleem mentioned that it's also important to approach resorts to have local guides, since the  number of surfing Liveaboards are very limited and we can easily identify and encourage our boats. Meanwhile, he mentioned that reliability and certification to maintain a standard is very important.

    11. Mr.Aznil mentioned that surf guides can be categorized in to 3 main classes.

    Class A - $ 50 p day
Very experienced surfers and surf guides

    Class B - $ 35 - $40 p.day
    Medium Range Surf Guides

    Class C - $ 25 p day
    New Surf Guides

    12. Mr. Ismail confirmed that LAM will encourage not only its members but the whole industry to support in empowering local surf guides and support MSA on achieving the goal, meanwhile he requested MSA to formally finalize and share the list of current certified surf guides on their website with their experiences , behavior and credits to apply by Liveaboard owners.

    13. Mr.Aznil invited LAM to join them on the meeting with Economic Ministry on 9th Feb 2015 to discuss in ensuring these matters are seriously attended by the government.

    14. Mr.Ismail requested MSA to work along with LAM on all issues which are with common interest, and mentioned that it's very dangerous for tourists and local guides due to the reason why a safe harbor is not allocated / developed.

    15. Mr.Aznil agreed that Hulhumale Lagoon is not safe due to no break waters and ensured MSA's support in the safe harbor issue for Liveaboards.

All members attended the meeting unanimously agreed to support in empowering the local surf guides and to request from all the boats to have a local surf guide on each surfing trip. Also agreed to work together in the issue of safe harbor.

  • Be careful on booking Safari Boats with Hoax operators :
    12th June 2014
Liveaboard Association of Maldives have advised foreign and Local Tour Operators to be careful on booking Safari Boats with Hoax operators :
As a NGO formed to protect the rights and develop the Liveaboard Industry, LAM have advised everyone to be cautious while booking  safari boats through fake identities.
This advise has been made due to various complains been received from international and local travel agents stating that boats have been sold at very lower prices by some operators without even the knowledge of the vessel owner and the original operators who have the exclusive rights to sell.
"There have been numerous incidents where these fake operators have sold Liveaboards without the knowledge of the owner, and it's notified only when the tourist arrives, and when they are informed that the vessel has been booked".  At that time, there's nothing much we can do. Hence we recommend all operators and everyone in this business to check from Liveaboard Association's official website www.liveaboards.mv and choose a valid operator / vessel while confirming a cruising holiday in the Maldives.

Mostly these incidents are being carried by the same people under different forge companies and fake identities and then grab money from individual travelers and groups. People get attracted because of their cheap price. But most of the time, the owner are not even aware about their vessel being sold.
It's been a great year for the Safari Boat Industry and LAM as we proudly hosted the first marine expo and the first boating award to enhance the service we offer from the industry. In additional special training Programmes for crew members were hosted with the support of MNDF Coast Guard.

    05th March 2014
    Dear All,

We are happy to inform you all that the long waited result have brought all of us happy news.

The government of Maldives have made an amendment to the resort boundary regulation on 5th March 2014 (gazzette link below) and have excluded all popular dive sites and surf breaks  from the resorts boundary.

By excluding these resources from resort boundary, the tourists are allowed to use these resources accordingly as they have been practicing over the last four decades without booking specific waves with a special operator.

However, to implement a good management plan, LAM will be working directly with the Ministry of Tourism  and assist them instead of working with private companies individually.

Thank you all for your patience and believing on our word, we will always work for the best interest of the industry.
